Postcard from Nassau
THE Bahamas had everything you’d expect of a sun-kissed tax haven: boatloads of wealthy cruise ship tourists; more offshore companies than you can shake a stick at – even more than Bermuda – and one of the highest GDPs per capita in the Americas.
There are gated homes for offshore lawyers and tax-efficient celebrities. China has invested a fortune, including buying the old British Colonial Hilton Hotel, handily opposite the US embassy. And a somewhat disputed Moody’s rating has given the territory the thumbs-up for the first time in a decade. So all’s well in paradise? Not really.
