100 years have now passed since the dissolution of the Great Northern Railway. Formed in the mid-1840s, the company was instrumental in connecting London, the eastern half of England, the North East and Scotland. Later, the GNR spread its wings and saw lines radiating into other parts of the country, including Nottinghamshire and WestYorkshire.
This book presents several of these areas of the company using over 250 superb blackand-white images. The GNR had a number of world-renowned engineers, including Patrick Stirling, H AIvatt, and Nigel Gresley, and their expertise is illustrated, not only with their famous locomotives but also assorted coaching stock.
Doncaster Works was at the heart of the company’s operations, and this is well illustrated. A selection of stations across the area of operation are also included, showing a long-gone way of life. The view of the approach road to Doncaster with numerous horse-drawn carriages and carts shows just how much life has changed in just over 100 years.
