The Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) was formed in 1917, and over 5,000 women were recruited by 1919. They were known as ‘Wrens’ and took on various roles from cooks to clerks, to electricians and weapons analysts.

Findmypast has recently released a set of enrolment records in collaboration with The National Museum of the Royal Navy. It’s called ‘British Women’s Royal Naval Service Enrolment 1917-1919’ and consists of enrolment application forms that include name, age, address, next of kin and employment undertaken while in service.
