FIRE SAFETY
FROM later this year, some baby products will no longer have to be laden with poisonous flame retardants to be sold in the UK, but progress on protecting everyone else from toxic furniture remains absurdly slow.
The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2025 will exclude play pens, children’s car seats, play mats, changing mats, prams, pushchairs, cribs and similar items from the infamous 1988 Furniture and Furnishings Regulations, which have long been recognised by scientists, firefighters and MPs as unfit for purpose because they bizarrely mandate the use of toxic chemicals (Eyes passim).
