Settlement accounts
WHILE the killing of hungry Palestinians continues, the only “concrete actions” taken in response to the death toll and misery in Gaza – last month called “intolerable” by prime minister Keir Starmer – have come not from Britain but from the Israeli government, announcing 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. A move admittedly designed to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Britain has long considered the existing settlements illegal under international law but has done little beyond making worthy statements. Meanwhile, Palestinians are increasingly driven off their land by Israeli settlers.
