UNVEILING his great “AI Action Plan” to transform the British economy, the prime minister did not have time to mention that he is the fifth PM to promise to make the UK a world leader in AI in just the past 11 years.
In 2014 David Cameron promised to make us a “world leader” in “the internet of things”; in 2017 Theresa May’s government promised to “supercharge” the UK’s AI development; 2019 saw Boris Johnson commit to £250m of investment to help the NHS become a “world leader” in AI; and in 2023 Rishi Sunak said we would become a “world leader” in AI safety. Leadership at its best!
