YET more universities are pushing ahead with staff cuts, blaming the sharp drop in the number of foreign students, having borrowed money for expansion plans in the misguided belief that lucrative international fees would keep flowing in.
Lecturers at Newcastle University balloted for strike action last week, as the university seeks to plug a £35m deficit through voluntary redundancies, a freeze on promotions and reviewing which building schemes can be put on hold. Only last year the university completed a £110m rebuild of the Stephenson engineering building, the latest of its expansion projects.
